Description
This lecture examines good citizenship as a foundation for nation-building in Nigeria from a social psychological perspective. It explores national consciousness, national pride, leadership, self-discipline, self-reliance, selfless service and loyalty, arguing that these qualities develop through socialisation rather than being innate. The discussion highlights the roles of families, schools and peer groups in shaping civic knowledge, attitudes and responsible behaviour. It identifies ethnic divisions as obstacles to national unity, distinguishes leadership from formal authority, and cautions against blind loyalty and unquestioning obedience. The lecture advocates education in national history and affairs, cross-cultural understanding, and discipline grounded in conscience and informed self-control. It concludes that nation-building requires a mutually supportive relationship between citizens and the state, sustained by a fairly applied constitution, trustworthy leadership and citizens committed to collective progress.
